OUR RESEARCH
We are interested in social cognition; cognitive mechanisms supporting social interactions. The issue we predominantly focus on is the role of metacognition is social feedback processing. Metacognition refers to the processes that serve monitoring and regulation of cognitive processes. Successful metacognition can help us detect and correct our mistakes, check the reliability of our beliefs, and learn from others. We investigate how metacognition guides us in integrating the information provided by social sources. We are also interested in if evolutionary pressures can create transient changes in our metacognitive sensitivities.
As separate research lines we have been interested in moral decision making, consumer behavior, and human-robot interactions.
TERRY ESKENAZI
Principal Investigator
Terry Eskenazi is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Koc University. She received her MSc in Social Psychology at the London School of Economics, and did her PhD at the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour in the Netherlands. She then continued to do research at École normal supérieur's LNC (Labratoire de Neurosciences Cognitives) before joining Koc University. Her research interests chiefly lie within social cognition and neuroscience, focusing on social decision making and metacognition.
DİCLE ÇAPAN, PhD
Dicle is a PhD graduate who received her B.A. degree in Psychology from Bahçeşehir University and completed her M.A. in Cognitive Science. She is mainly interested in social influences on metacognitive evaluations and memory processes. Her plans include studying social learning in relation to metacognition, with a developmental focus. When not working, you can see Dicle eating chocolate, making plans for a short-escapade from the city, enjoying concerts, movies, and books.
BEGÜM YILMAZ
PhD Student
Begüm is a first-year PhD student who earned her MA in Cognitive Psychology from Koç University and her BA in Philosophy from Boğaziçi University. Her primary research focuses on children's higher-order thinking processes and their connections to conceptual understanding across various domains. Outside of academia, she enjoys exploring new places and capturing moments through photography.
CAN AVCI
PhD Student
Can is a first year PhD student in Cognitive Psychology. He received his BA and MA in Psychology with a minor in Philosophy from Koç University. He is mainly interested in how language interacts with other cognitive processes, including social cognition. Currently, he is investigating how disfluencies and gestures affect our judgments of others. Outside of research, he enjoys discussing philosophical topics and lifting weights.
CEM KARBUZ
Undergraduate Student
Cem is a senior undergraduate student in psychology and sociology, also minoring in international relations. They are broadly interested in social cognition, specifically neural underpinnings related to it. Besides academia, they like playing video games and petting cats!
DEFNE KOÇHAN
Undergraduate Student
Defne is a senior undergraduate student from Psychology and Sociology departments. She is mainly interested in social cognition, especially social categorization and gender development. To wind down and refresh her mind she loves learning how a good cup of coffee is made, taking a mouthful sip and wandering around the city with the energy it brings.
YAREN SİNEM TEMİZKAN
Undergraduate Student
Yaren is a junior undergraduate student of Psychology and Sociology. Her main interest areas are gender, social-cognitive development, and perception. In her spare time, she loves writing, video-making and photography.
DERİN EDA DERELİOĞLU
MA Student
Derin is a second year MA student in cognitive psychology. She completed a double major in psychology and molecular biology and genetics, along with a minor in philosophy in Koç university. She's been working as an undergraduate assistant in SoMi laboratory since summer 2019. Topics she is interested in are social cognition and cognitive neuroscience. Current projects she is working on in the laboratory are focused on being-watched and objective self-awareness on virtual platforms. Some of her extracurricular interests are watercolor painting, true crime and historical dramas.
BERKAY BAYRAM
Undergraduate Student
Berkay is a junior undergraduate in Psychology and Sociology with a double major. They are highly interested in cognitive processes revolving around gender detection, recognition, and perception. In their spare time, they like watching shows, chit chatting with friends, having coffee, and writing poetry.
İDİL DAL
Undergraduate Student
İdil is a senior undergraduate in psychology and media and visual arts with a double major.
ZÜLAL BERRA DAKIN
Undergraduate Student
Zülal is a senior undergraduate in psychology and economics, with a minor major in international relations.
