Terry Eskenazi is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Koc University. She received her MSc in Social Psychology at the London School of Economics, and did her PhD at the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour in the Netherlands. She then continued to do research at École normal supérieur's LNC (Labratoire de Neurosciences Cognitives) before joining Koc University. Her research interests chiefly lie within social cognition and neuroscience, focusing on social decision making and metacognition.
Dicle is a PhD student who received her B.A. degree in Psychology from Bahçeşehir University and completed her M.A. in Cognitive Science. She is mainly interested in social influences on metacognitive evaluations and memory processes. Her plans include studying social learning in relation to metacognition, with a developmental focus. When not working, you can see Dicle eating chocolate, making plans for a short-escapade from the city, enjoying concerts, movies, and books.
Deniz studied Western Languages and Literatures Department at Bogazici University, where she developed passion for many fields and improved her imagination. After completing her MA in Marketing at Marmara University, she decided to continue her academic journey as a Marketing PhD student and a SoMi at Koc University. Through collaborating with psychology and computer engineering department, she explores the social side of robotics.
She is also a freelance translator and full-time adventurer. She loves sailing, and snowboarding.
Cansın is a PhD student who has graduated from Cyprus International University, and received an MSc degree in Brain Imaging-Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Nottingham where she studied about the neural correlates of working memory in the processing of emotional material with functional-MRI. She is interested in exploring the effects of social influence on cognitive and metacognitive processes, especially in decision making. She is also curious about how psychiatric conditions might interact with metacognitive abilities. In her free times, you can find her enjoying live music in a local bar or a social dance night. Apart from music and dancing, she thinks that ‘food’ is the sacred fuel of a fulfilled life.
Dilan is a PhD student, graduated from Middle East Technical University psychology department in 2018. She also has a minor degree in molecular biology and genetics. She is interested in learned helplessness, metacognitive accuracy, and the evolutionary mechanisms that shaped metacognition. During her free time she loves going to the theatre and concerts.
HANDE ÖZLEM ATAR
Hande is a second year MA student in cognitive psychology, graduated from MEF University Psychology program. During her bachelor, she worked at various laboratories to learn more about the field and realized that she is interested in social decision making processes and moral psychology. Other than seeking to be a researcher, Hande loves gathering with her friends and having fun through Turkish coffee fortunes
İlayda is a second year MA student in social psychology. After studying economics and psychology as an undergraduate at Koç University, she decided to delve into the area of judgement and decision making. She is interested in studying decision making by integrating different approaches from social cognition and behavioral economics. Besides her life in academia, she loves being an energetic morning person, exploring new places and dancing tango.
Berfin is a first year MA student in cognitive psychology. She has completed her undergraduate studies in psychology in Koç University. Primary pursuit of her research is to build a more comprehensive understanding of cognitive and metacognitive backstage of behavioral addictions. She fancies the processes of personality and self (mis)construction and whirlpool of behavior validating incorrect self beliefs and attributions. When left to her lonesome, she contemplates the complexity of feline thought and plays video games.
Begüm is a first year MA student in Cognitive Psychology track and she received her BA from Boğaziçi University, Philosophy Department. She is mainly interested in self-other distinction, metacognition, and qualia. Since she is a philosopher -even though there is not a single definition of philosopher-, she loves to discuss philosophical concepts with psychologists. Besides her academic interests, she likes to explore new places and take photographs.
DERİN EDA DERELİOĞLU
Derin is a first year MA student in cognitive psychology. She completed a double major in psychology and molecular biology and genetics, along with a minor in philosophy in Koç university. She's been working as an undergraduate assistant in SoMi laboratory since summer 2019. Topics she is interested in are social cognition and cognitive neuroscience. Current projects she is working on in the laboratory are focused on being-watched and objective self-awareness on virtual platforms. Some of her extracurricular interests are watercolor painting, true crime and historical dramas.
Alper is a senior undergraduate student at Koç University in Psychology and MAVA departments. As a longtime SoMi, he is still very excited and curious about metacognition. Along with his ongoing projects, he is working on a project in collaboration with Ongun Kılıç. In his personal life, he enjoys photography and cinema.
Deniz is an undergraduate student from Psychology and Molecular Biology and Genetics departments. The reason why she is a part of SoMi is her curiosity on human cognition and its operations in social contexts, and she wants to pursue an academic career on this topic. Though, she is still considering becoming a professional dog trainer and adds;
"Will decide according to my success in the lab projects ;)"
Ongun is a senior undergraduate student at Koç University, double majoring in philosophy and psychology, who joined the SoMi Lab in the Summer of 2021. His main interests are in the interface of philosophy of mind, metaphysics and AI ethics. He is currently thinking about the possible conceptual differences between mental events, mental processes and mental states. Current empirical work he is undertaking consists of two research projects on spatial cognition, one of which is in collaboration with Alper Yelimlieş. In his free time he likes spending time on video games and cinema.
